Why have Americans become so cynical?

I was watching an American movie last night called Air Force one, and during the movie a missile is heading towards the president's aeroplane and a jet fighter pilot goes in front of it to save the president. There are also many other examples throughout the feature film where dozens of people sacrifice themselves for the president. I noticed a stark difference between the movies than and the movies now.
