Can you defeat Ridley before Kraid in the original Metroid?

So I found Kraid and I think I figured out how you beat him. You freeze the horns or boomerangs or whatever he throws at you and then you fire missiles at him while avoiding the missiles he throws at you. I've figured that out but I can't quite execute it. So is it possible to find and defeat Ridley before you defeat Kraid?
