In movies american soldiers point a laser on the target to guide missiles what technology is that?

In transformers and Battles LA you can see that ground forces used laser (or infrared I don't know which one) to point out the target, and as long as the target is pointed by the signal, the missile will hit it, so my question is what guidance technology is that? and what missiles or bombs use this technology. Thx
